The familiar Plan-Do-Check-Act backbone and the Annex SL structure shared across ISO management system standards (such as ISO 27001 or ISO 21001) remain untouched. What has evolved is the emphasis: quality culture, ethical behavior, sharper risk and opportunity management, and the integration of climate-related requirements introduced back in 2024.
Key Changes in ISO 9001:2026
1. Quality Culture and Ethical Behaviour (Clause 5.1)
The most talked-about addition. Top management is now explicitly required to promote and demonstrate a quality culture and ethical behaviour across the organization. 4. Expanded Annex A Guidance
Annex A has been significantly expanded to align with Clauses 4 through 10, giving auditors and quality managers more detailed, practical explanations of how to interpret and apply the standard’s requirements.
5. Editorial Clarifications Throughout
A number of notes and clauses across Sections 4 to 10 have been reworded or expanded purely for clarity, without changing the underlying requirements.
What Does This Mean If You’re Already ISO 9001:2015 Certified?
There’s no need to panic. Certification bodies typically allow a transition period of two to three years, meaning organizations already certified to ISO 9001:2015 are expected to have until late 2029 to migrate their QMS to the new edition. Existing certifications remain fully valid during this period.
That said, waiting until the deadline is rarely a good strategy. Early movers benefit from:
- More time to close gaps identified during a preliminary review of Clause 6.1 and 5.1 requirements.
- A smoother, less rushed internal audit and documentation update cycle.
- A competitive edge with clients and partners who increasingly expect visible commitment to quality culture and ethics, not just paperwork.
How to Start Preparing Your Organization
- Get familiar with the new text. Compare the 2026 edition against your current 2015-based QMS documentation, focusing first on Clauses 5.1 and 6.1.
- Train your quality team and internal auditors on the new requirements, particularly the « quality culture and ethical behaviour » concept, since this is the area most likely to generate new audit questions.
- Run a gap analysis against your quality manual, risk register, and management review process.
- Update your internal audit checklists to include the new subclauses and expanded Annex A guidance.
